Tapestry of Grace-Year One-Lower Grammar

I created this list to supplement the Tapestry of Grace Curriculum. Items in this list are in alphabetical order. The bold headings are the TOG books. Underneath are my suggestions for substitutions or supplements.


City: A Story of Roman Planning and Construction-David Macaulay

Roman City (J VHS)-This is David Macaulay’s City on video

Conquest: Can You Build a Roman City? -Julia Bruce (2 copies) This is a more modern book, includes diagrams of a Roman City.

Rome Antics-David Macaulay (strictly supplementary) In this picture book, a pigeon carries a message through ancient and modern Greece.

Classical Kids: An Activity Guide to Life in Ancient Greece and Rome-Laurie Carlson

Ancient Rome: Exploring the Culture, People and Ideas of This Powerful Empire-Avery Hart-Lots of information on Ancient Rome, including the story of Romulus and Remus, also many activities to extend the lesson.

Cleopatra-Diane Stanley

You wouldn’t want to be Cleopatra: An Egyptian Ruler you’d Rather Not Be-Jim Pipe-A comic look at the life of Cleopatra, includes gory details that children will love.

Cleopatra VII, Daughter of the Nile-Kristiana Gregory (Royal Diaries)-This might be a little mature for primary grades. It’s a fictional diary based on the life of Cleopatra as a girl. Small sections could be helpful to help younger children get a glimpse of the life of royalty in Ancient Egypt.

Royal Diaries DVD includes "Cleopara: Daughter of the Nile."

The Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt-Leonard Everett Fisher-(5 copies)

Egyptians-Stephanie Turnbull

Ancient Egypt-George Hart-DK (Eyewitness Books) This title is similar to other books in the Eyewitness Book Series. They use artifacts from the Smithsonian Museums. It’s the next best thing to being there.

Ancient Egyptians and Their Neighbors: An Activity Guide-Marion Broda

Ancient Egypt Revealed-Peter Chrisp-This book has excellent pictures. The content may be a little difficult for primary students.

Ancient Egypt DVD-Ancient Civilizations for Children Series

Great Ancient Egypt Projects You Can Build Yourself-Carmella Van Vleet. Lots of background information is given for each project.

Ralph Masiello’s Ancient Egypt Drawing Book-This title is for fun. It shows step by step instructions for drawing Ancient Egypt figures and landmarks

God Around Us-Mira Brichto

You Wouldn’t Want to Work on the Great Wall of China: Defenses You’d Rather Not Build-Jacqueline Morley-a hilarious look at the life construction workers, includes handy tips for survival in Ancient China. I recommend all books in this series.

The Hardest Word-Jacqueline Jules

Celebrate Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur-Deborah Heiligman-original selection by TOG, This was produced by National Geographic and shows both holidays being celebrated around the world.

Hour of the Olympics-Mary Pope Osborne (11 copies, more in paperback)

Ancient Greece and the Olympics: A Nonfiction Guide to the Hour of the Olympics, Mary Pope Osborne, Natalie Pope Boyce-These guides are short and broken down into easily readable sections. It can be used with The Hour of the Olympics but it can also stand alone.

Mummies Made in Egypt DVD This is basically the book on DVD.

Mummies, Pyramids and Pharaohs: A Book about Ancient Egyptians-Gail Gibbons. Gibbons can make almost any topic appealing. She does an excellent job with this one as well.

The Best Book of Mummies-Phillip Steel, This title illustrates steps in preparing the body for mummification, easy to read.

Outside and Inside Mummies-Sandra Markle-This book is more advanced and goes into more detail about the mummification process.

The Nile River-Allan Fowler

The Story of the Nile-Steve Noon (DK) This large format book has wonderful pictures of the Nile and Egyptian culture, highly recommended.

We’re Sailing Down the Nile: A Journey through Egypt-Laurie Krebs This is a simple picture book that features lots of Ancient Egypt sites. (6 copies)

Lady of Palenque, Flower of Bacal-Anna Kirwan-Royal Diaries Series-This book was written for upper elementary students but younger students would probably enjoy selections about the fictional life of this Mayan Queen as a girl.

Song of Creation-Paul Goble

The Story of Little Babaji-Helen Bannerman

Sam and the Tigers-Julius Lester, This is another modern version of Little Black Sambo, created about the same time as The Story of Little Babaji.

The Tale of the Three Trees-Angela Ellwell Hunt

The Tower of Babel-Alison Greengard-This bilingual title is listed in its original language in the library catalog. It’s easier to locate doing an author search

Trojan Horse: How the Greeks Won the War-Emily Little

Trojan Horse: The World’s Greatest Adventure-David Clement Davies-This title is very similar to the title above. Both were written for newly independent readers and have lots of visual appeal. This title is an Eyewitness Reader, Level 4.

The Chinese Empire-Phillip Steele-4 (Passport to the Past Series)-a good general introduction to Ancient China

Ancient China DVD-Ancient Civilizations for Children Series

Adventures in Ancient China-Linda Bailey-Ms. Frizzle and the children from the Magic School Bus Series visit Ancient Egypt.

You Wouldn’t Want to Be a Pyramid Builder: A Hazardous Job You’d Rather Not Have-Jacqueline Morley

Pyramid-Caroline Bingham-DK Eye Wonder-The Eye Wonder Series is simpler and easier to read than most of the DK books it also includes excellent visuals.

Pyramids and Mummies-Simon Seymour (See More Readers Series) This series targets younger elementary students. Simon Seymour is known for authoring hundreds of nonfiction books.

Pyramid-Peter Chrisp-This is another DK book. It has strong visuals but the content may be a little advanced for primary grades.
